Fireplace, stove or insert, wood or gas. One call books the visit.
We look at the top first
Rust, cracks and soot on the cap and crown say a lot about the flue below.
Then we sweep
The flue is brushed from the top down while the hearth stays covered.
Photos before we go
You see the top of your chimney without climbing up there.

Wood stoves and inserts, not only fireplaces
A stove or an insert has its own flue and a connector pipe, and both get swept. We also look after the parts that wear out on a stove:
- Door gaskets that no longer seal
- Catalytic combustors, on stoves that have one
- The air wash that keeps the glass clear

How often should I have my chimney swept?
Once a year for a fireplace or stove you use regularly, and sooner if you burn a lot of wood through a cold Fox Valley winter. A sweep removes the creosote that every fire leaves behind, which is what a chimney fire burns.
My chimney cap is rusted. Does it matter?
Yes. A rusted cap stops keeping rain, snow, birds and leaves out of the flue, and pieces of it can fall inside. A stainless steel replacement sized to the flue fixes it for years.
Why is the glass on my stove always black?
Usually the fire is burning too cool, the wood is wet, or the air wash that sweeps clean air across the glass is out of adjustment. A sweep, a look at the air wash and a few tips on building the fire usually clear it up.
What wood keeps the flue cleanest?
Dry, seasoned hardwood. Wet or green wood burns cool and smoky and leaves more creosote in the flue, which is exactly what a sweep has to brush out.
